MEWA Women Action Group (MWAG) is the women’s wing of the Muslim Education and Welfare Association (MEWA) in Mombasa. It was set up in 1998, after the realization that women were an integral component of the work of MEWA.
Previous activities include cooking food for MEWA Drug Treatment Centre’s patients, supplying food items and clothes to Orphanages, preparing bodies of females who had no relatives around for burial, assisting in MEWA Medical Camps and fundraising. MWAG has been inactive for a while and has now been revived with the support of MEWA to engage in well formulated strategic socio-economic intervention into the local community.
Vision
MWAG aims at being a major contributor to the socio-economic improvement of Muslim Women and Youth in Kenya.
Mission
The mission of MWAG is to promote, encourage and improve the socio-economic standards of Muslim women and youth in Kenya.
Objectives
The main objectives of MWAG (MEWA Women Action Group) are as follows-:
- To create awareness amongst women and youth on the importance of education
- To encourage women and youth to engage in income generating activities for poverty eradication
- To inform women and youth on nutrition, health , HIV/AIDS and drug abuse
- To protect the girl child against abuse unique to her e.g. forced marriages, FGM, rape and personal hygiene
Proposed future activities of MWAG include;
Educational Talks
The primary objective of MWAG is to improve the educational standard of the members of our community, especially the youth.
MWAG has already undertaken a study of the problems primary student go through. This will assist the group in identifying areas of concern to be tackled so as to make the learning environment more conducive for these learners.
This exercise will include visiting schools and inviting students, teachers and parents to talks on the best learning practices and also offer inspiration through motivational talks, geared at making young people grow to love seeking knowledge.
Employment Bureau
The educational talks will require capital for research, consultations, guest speakers, stationery and so on, MWAG plans to sustain this exercise by engaging in an income generating activity, namely an employment bureau.
Regrettably, in the Coast Province there is not one employment bureau that primarily focuses on meeting up the Muslim Employer with the Muslim employee. It is a fact that many employees are looking to be hired by Muslim run companies and organizations to safe guard themselves from haram jobs and haram income. There are also many employers who are looking to employ Muslim employees for their trustworthiness, understanding of Islamic principles, empowering members’ of the Ummah and so on.
The employment bureau run by MWAG, will not only offer these services at an affordable price, but will also engage in seminars to educate members of the community on ideas of income generation and small business management. The employment bureau will also develop a database of the Muslim Professionals and come up with a directory of Muslim Professionals in the Coast Province.
Charity
MWAG also plans to make charitable contributions when the need arises, to orphanages in the form of food and clothing.
