MEWA started a Computer Training Programme in October 2006 to introduce Computer Technology – as a means of enhancing youth from needy backgrounds to favorably and competently participate in the job market. The knowledge is expected to improve on the technological aspects of the community by empowering the youth with the current know-how of obtaining, sharing and transferring knowledge in all important fields of development.
This will as well ensure that the youth improve their leadership qualities by giving them an opportunity to become sound decision makers through using their computer knowledge to make projections based on past experiences.
To date the centre based at our head office has trained over 800 students on basic computer packages at a highly subsidized rate of Kshs. 1,500/= per course. The main challenge of the training centre is on maintenance of the computers.
The Centre in partnership with an Irish based organization has also managed to distribute over 400 computers to schools all over the country as follows

Youth camps
MEWA organizes annual holiday educational camps for youth between the ages of 14 to 25 years old at district, provincial and national level. This is a very important activity in the calendar events of MEWA as it seeks to mould our youth to become responsible Muslim Leaders. The camps’ programmes are facilitated by professionals in various fields.
Library Facility
MEWA also has a library facility which is open to the public. The library provide an essential study cum reading facility for the local students in particular and the general public, a majority of who come from the poorer segment of the society, where homes lack basic study/reading facilities.
The facility has generated a lot of interest in reading among students. Students have now initiated group discussion and studies thus helping them academically. The facility has also established youth discussion on issues affecting them such as Leadership, HIV/AIDS pandemic and the problem of Drug Abuse.
The library has also a special section for children which is open from 4.00 pm to 5.00 pm, Mondays to Fridays, for children from the ages of 7-12, to visit the library (classes one to six in Primary School). The children get a chance to get acquainted with the library, its staff and procedures, learn about the proper care of books, as well as homework supervision. Additional programmes for children include artwork and story telling session.
Management training
MEWA organizes courses such as Total Quality Management, Leadership & Team Building, Presentation & Communication skills and CV and Interview skills on annual basis to middle level managers and CBO leaders. The training are facilitated by Muslims Management Consultants
Community Healthcare Financing Scheme
The board conducted a data survey within Mombasa Island to establish the possibility of starting a community-based health care financing scheme that will benefit the poorer segment of our Community and the Ummah in general.
It is hoped that the survey will ascertain our community health needs and expenses and thus develop a health care scheme that will enable our people to access quality health care at a highly subsidized rate affordable to all.
Youth Exchange Programme
This is a new project started in 2008. MEWA has partnered with British Council and VSO Jiltolee to jointly carry out an international volunteer exchange programme, between young people from the Coast Province and their counterparts in the UK.
The volunteers, 9 from our community and 9 from UK, will spend 3 months in UK and 3 months in where they will conduct voluntary programme in various Community based Organizations. Through their work they we hope they will be able to inspire other youth in Mombasa to spend their spare time in voluntary activities that will not only bring progress to Mombasa, but will also improve the youth life skills. |
