MEWA (Muslim Education and Welfare Association) was formed with the objective of improving the educational and welfare status of our Community. Indeed it started as a result of the zeal of a small group of our Muslim brothers to reverse the poor academic standard of our youth, way back in 1986. Their effort was thus directed towards activities that promoted academic excellence, such as operating tuition centres, career advisory exhibition and bursary disbursement to needy students, among other numerous Educational activities.

The library facility at our hall offers study cum reading facility to students (majority of who come from the poorer segment of the society) who have great potential but their studies are been frustrated by lack of these basic facilities at their homes.

MEWA seeks not only to assist in access to study cum reading room but also exhort the users to a reading culture that may lead to high academic performance and achievement.

Our community continues to lag behind in Education compared with other communities, despite consistent efforts by ALL Stakeholders to reverse this trend. There are of course many reasons for the failure in advancement to Education in our community, such as Parental attitude, Poor school management, Lack of good teachers and the misunderstood religious factor (anti - secular sentiments). However, studies carried out in Majengo area of Mombasa district indicated that lack of proper studying or reading facilities is one of the major causes of failure in Education. There is no doubt that if Educational issues were properly addressed then our Community would acquire solutions to a significant number of its socio-economic problems.

Most of the office’s immediate neighbors, (In the Majengo area of Mombasa), constitute homes that are densely populated with most of its dwellers living in traditional extended Swahili family set-ups where homes lack basic reading facilities. So, hardly any or no reading or learning takes place at home and at times school going children are forced to do their school assignments and homework in  ‘Maskanis’ (dens) which are also used by drug users and pushers for whom the children are easy prey.

This problem is further complicated by lack of library facilities in Mombasa in general. With the increase in population and the increase in the number of library users, the only Public library in Mombasa- Kenya National Library, is becoming relatively small to serve the Mombasa users at any given time. This becomes worse during exam time when the students are seen scattered all over the library’s compound due to lack of seats inside the library.

With the setting up of a library at MEWA hall, the Welfare board not only help introduce a reading culture to the youth and provide facilities that are seriously lacking in our homes, but also supplement the effort of our Government to provide free reading and studying facilities to the community.
