MEWA Drug Treatment Centre
 


MEWA is in the forefront in the fight against drug abuse among the vulnerable groups within our society. It has successful established a residential treatment on the outskirt of Mombasa town as a result of the concern on the growing number of the youth in Mombasa involved in drug abuse.  The facility was donated by the Rotary International and formally launched on 8th April, 2001.
The centre has to date provided residential treatment and rehabilitation to more than 300 drug abusers with some of them now actively playing a role of voluntarily creating awareness against the vice.
The Centre is now run by 6 professional trained counselors and recovered addicts who played a very important role in the treatment and recovering programme

Awareness programme

The Board also carry out community awareness programme to sesnitize the community on dangers posed by drug abuse.are also held to sensitize and educate the public on various issues related to drug abuse and HIV/AIDS. One of the main events of the board is on the campaign against drug abuse and illicit trafficking commemorated worldwide on 26th June.
Regular radio talks MEWA also carry out awareness campaigns in various schools and public forums within Mombasa.

MEWA Detox and Outreach Programme

MEWA Detoxification Unit is a sub branch of MEWA Drug Treatment Centre. It was established in early May 2006, in partnership with UNODC (United Nation Office on Drug and Crime) as a need arose for expansion of drug treatment.  
The Centre has a mission of helping the risky population (intravenous drug users) to access treatment and reduces the spread of HIV/AIDS among the drug users. It mainly caters for assessment, detoxification, outpatient and act as an information center. The following is a profile of the institute.

MEWA conduct outreach programme for HIV/AIDS amongst heroin IDU/DU (Injection Drug Users/ Drug Users) in Kilifi district. The programme aimed at educating drug users with information about HIV/AIDS and risk reduction and conduct counselling and referrals for drug treatment and care.  It is expected that the project will reduce HIV/AIDS infections that happens through sharing needles and unsafe sex, arm reductions (safe equipment use) and better understanding of HIV status through VCT programmes.
