Educational Sponsorship and bursaries
MEWA was established on a platform of education. The pioneers of MEWA having seen the declining educational performance of the Muslim students in the late 80’s resolved to establish intervention programme with one of them being supporting poor students accessing education in Secondary and Higher Institutes of learning.
More than Kshs. 8,000,000 has so far been advanced to over 500 students to pursue degree and diploma courses in local Universities and colleges locally and abroad between the years 1986 and 2006.
Most of these students are now working in different professional fields such as Medicine, Law, Engineering, Teaching etc. MEWA has also assisted over 800 poor but talented students Secondary students to pay their school fees thanks to the generosity of our well-wishers.
The Association now seeks to create a revolving fund to sponsor students for degrees and postgraduate studies either locally or abroad. It also aims to solicit scholarships from Universities abroad and donors for our local needy but talented youth.
Student of the Year Award scheme
MEWA academic award ceremony is as old as the Association itself. The first ceremony was held on the 23rd of February 1986 when MEWA was an ad-hoc committee known as MOMBASA MUSLIM EDUCATION COMMITTEE formed in early 1985.
The importance of this ceremony in the field of Education is paramount as it seeks to recognize the excellent academic performance of our Muslim students in the National Examinations of KCPE and KCSE.
This recognition indeed encourages other students who attended this function in large numbers to put more effort in their studies and performed even better. Traditionally, this platform is also used to honour not only students but also our brothers and sisters who have rendered their services tirelessly to uplift the educational standard of the Ummah.
Evening Tuition Classes
The Organization highly values education as an important tool of development. It helped established free evening tuition classes to Secondary and Primary students to supplement schools’ education.
The Centres are situated in different localities and have played a significant role in the improvement of academic performance of Muslim students in Mombasa. It is worth mentioning that the lessons at the centres are provided by the local people on voluntary basis.
