MEWA Drug Awareness Procession Day |
To mark the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Traffic, a drug awareness procession/march was organized by MEWA, in Mombasa. This is the 7th time MEWA worked on this project. MEWA shares the UNODC’s (United Nation’s Office on Drugs and Crime) determination to fight this scourge. Its aim was to increase awareness about drug abuse and its devastating effects on individuals, families and the local communities. This event offers a great opportunity to advocate to the community about the negative effects of drug abuse and increase interest in tackling this problem. This year’s theme expanded on last year’s theme and included the central message: “Do drugs control your life? Your life, Your Community. No place for drugs. No place for cultivation”.
The procession was extremely successful it activated approximately 3,000 people in a march against drugs, from Tononoka grounds to the Makadara grounds on June 26th. Various groups attended including local schools, youth groups, women’s groups, community leaders, etc. A local drama group also provided entertainment at the event.

Planning a Halfway House
|
The success rate of MEW DTC getting drug addicts clean is 60%. The management acknowledge that this figure could even be higher. However, a big problem is re-integration back into the community so a halfway house is needed to allow the clients support in accommodation and counseling in their re-integration. This centre will also offer a vocational skills training programme where the clients can train in carpentry, electrician, plumbing, mechanic skills, etc.
Funding is being sought for the financing of the building of this Halfway house. Private donors are currently being sought to support in the Ksh 3.2 million cost.
