The above table indicates the beneficiaries of the services offered by MMC over the last decade.
MEWA Drug Rehabilitation and Resource Centre
The centre is situated at Bamburi in Kisauni Division of Mombasa District. The Project was initiated by MEWA as a result of the concern on the growing number of the youth in Mombasa involved in drug abuse.
The centre has successfully managed to provide residential treatment and rehabilitation to more than 150 drug abusers with some of them now actively playing a role of voluntarily creating awareness against the vice. The facility was donated by the Rotary International and formally launched on 8th April, 2001.
In conjunction with drug abuse agencies such as UNODC (United Nation Office on Drug and Crime) the Centre has been able to provide information and create awareness to the Community on drugs.
Nutrition Programme -
This was a pilot study conducted for a period of one year, from 1st April 2005 to 31st April 2006, to establish incident rate of mild/moderate malnutrition for children less than 5 years of age for selected Pre-school institutes within Mvita Constituency of Mombasa district. The total number of sample study was 150 children. This study concluded
that there is a mild to moderate cases of malnutrition among the under 5 years old (60% of total sample) and we recommend to the parents to breastfeed their children for about 6 months from birth, cover children with mosquito nets when sleeping, boil untreated water and provide appropriate nourishment to their children.
We now look forward to expand our programme to cover a wider area within the Coast Province of Kenya.
Scholarships/loans
More than KES 3,000,000 was advanced to about 500 students to pursue degree and diploma courses in local Universities and colleges locally and abroad between the years 1986 and 2000. Most of these students are now working in different professional fields such as Medicine, Law, Engineering, Teaching etc.
However, this programme was suspended due to lack of funding resulting from non- repayment of the loans by defaulters and lack of donors.
Bursaries
Approximately KES 8,000,000 have been disbursed to assist needy but talented students to assist in paying their Secondary school fees.
Evening Tuition classes
MEWA successfully initiated and operates regular tuitions for both Primary (Standard 7 & 8) and Secondary students (form 3 & 4) in various centres within Mombasa district such as Tawfiq Liwatoni, Tijara and Kibokoni centres. The programme has tremendously assisted in improving the academic performance of students and enhances a reading culture within these localities.
Management Courses
MEWA has been able to organize for trainings in Management and Communication skills to more than 500 youth and middle class Managers on a free of charge basis in conjunction with Management Consultants from Nairobi and other Organizations such as British Council.
MOCK Exams
